For the past decade, the speaker has taught a course called "Conveying Light" to Master’s students in Architectural Lighting Design at Hochschule Wismar in Germany. That course explores the role of language in shaping how we conceptualize, communicate, and execute lighting design ideas. This presentation marks the course's tenth anniversary, and reflects on its development, impact, and future potential.

Daylighting and electric lighting can end up mismatched or in conflict in buildings. Usually designed by separate disciplines, they are rarely coordinated in spite of their combined impact on the performance and visual comfort of the space. Coordination can usually be seen only in the daylight dimming zones mandated by code. However, the highest quality visual environment is achieved when both sources of light are designed integrally to work together, even with separate consultants on the project.

Illuminance, measured in foot-candles or lux, has long been the metric used to recommend lighting levels for specific applications. This session takes the perspective that two metrics are likely necessary to adequately address end users’ perception of the adequacy of illumination in various applications.

As our world becomes more connected and at the same time more aware of the consequences of our connections, addressing the use of light at night should become more of a global focus. But it’s not as simple as just flipping a switch. Globally, the presence of light pollution is increasing faster than scientists predicted. While the loss of access to quality dark skies filled with stars is important, on a more practical basis there are potential health risks and safety concerns posed by poor quality outdoor lighting. There is a strong argument to say that we, as lighting designers, need to lead the effort to protect the quality of the night through example, motivation, and education.

Sure, you’ve been doing lighting design for a long time. You make efficient choices, do calculations to prove that your design strategies work, you understand products and technology, and architects hire you because you are an excellent communicator. How do you come up with your neat design ideas? Sometimes small choices help the humblest of projects come to life.
