Student Portfolio Showcase

Jackson Hanus, Student IALD

Through the generous support of the lighting community, the IALD Education Trust has granted over 100 scholarships to lighting design students in a dozen countries. Students applying for one of these scholarships must submit a lighting project demonstrating their process, concept, project goals, and considerations for technical criteria.

The IALD Education Trust is proud to showcase exemplary student work, including our 2025 Thomas M. Lemons Scholarship winner: Jackson Hanus, Student IALD.

About the Student Designer

Jackson Hanus is a first-year PhD student in Civil Engineering at the University of Cincinnati's College of Engineering and Applied Science. Jackson's work examines the human factors in lighting, specifically how it impacts night shift workers in the spaces they occupy.

The IALD Education Trust thanks Susan Rosen and Steven Rosen, FIALD, CLD, of Available Light, for their generous funding of the Thomas M. Lemons Scholarship since 2009.

Project Description

"The 2023 Howard Brandston Student Lighting Design Education Grant featured in my portfolio was completed as part of a team of four students, including myself, at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The Illuminating Engineering Society provided the reflected ceiling plan, floor plan, and details on the primary use of the space. I was responsible for either portions or the entirety of most images displayed in my portfolio.

"On the first page, I completed the sketches, mock-ups, and project description. On the second page, I designed the lighting layout for the classrooms and the luminous ceiling in the lobby in Revit, as shown in the reflected ceiling plan. I also advised and assisted with the lighting layout for the circulation spaces. Additionally, I solely contributed to the lighting control diagram, luminaire schedule, and lobby illuminance calculation.

"Each rendering on the last page was completed either by me or collaboratively with my team. I was primarily responsible for Renders Two, Three, and Five, which I worked on in 3DS Max. For Render One, I implemented the luminous ceiling in 3DS Max and created the mushroom structure on the ceiling in SketchUp. In Render Four, I created the ceiling structure and material finishes."

Those interested in the Student Scholarship Program can find more information, including the next application period, on the IALD Education Trust website.
