The IALD Supports the SLL "Ready Steady Light" Program
Fifteen teams of lighting designers in various stages of their careers, from students to company directors, took part in this year’s Society of Light and Lighting "Ready Steady Light" at Rose Bruford in London, UK.
This small lighting festival is an annual event, a fast and furious evening where designers only have 180 minutes to create lit scenes across the campus around a self-chosen theme.
This year’s teams were from the IALD, Rose Bruford College, Marlow Integrated Designs Ltd., Equation Lighting Design, WSP in the UK, Foster + Partners, Ridge and Partners LLP, Stantec, Arup, Cundall, Rosedale College, Xavio Design, and three teams from Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London.
Judges Beatrice Bertolini, Associate IALD, and Emma Cogswell, IALD UK awarded the artistic prize to Xavio Design, who lit the white façade of one of the oldest parts of the college. The design accentuated the cross-like architectural stays and decorative window details with color-changing projectors, using hues and themes from the Mexican holiday El Día de los Muertos.
A special mention was given to ARUP for their ingenious idea of focusing the eye on the miniature, creating four points of interest around the four seasons. Chestnut husks were used to cast shadows in the shape of hedgehogs walking along a log and reminding us to look after the natural world, a great interpretation of the materials the teams had at hand.
The IALD looks forward to participating again next year and judging all the new creations.
